Small wildfire quickly contained on Hungry Jack Lake following lightning strike
A small wildfire started by lightning was quickly extinguished last night on Hungry Jack Lake in the Mid-Gunflint Trail area.
The fire started at approximately 8:20 p.m. last night, according to members of the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department. According to the preliminary report, a large white pine caught fire during the thunderstorm that swept across Cook County last night. More than a dozen firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, which burned for more than two hours last night. Rainfall last night contributed to the firefighting effort, according to local officials.
The fire was burning last night on the north shore of Hungry Jack Lake, about halfway down the north shoreline of the popular Mid-Trail Lake.
Additional firefighting crews will be sent to Hungry Jack Lake today to confirm that the fire is still out and that it won’t reignite, officials from the U.S. Forest Service told WTIP Monday morning.
